Disadvantages to Home Schooling - It is Not for Everyone

Home schooling programs can be very hard for parents to begin & maintain, & there are many disadvantages to pulling your children out of traditional schooling options to begin home schooling. Before you decide to take this course of action, review the advantages, along with the disadvantages. Drawbacks include lack of socialization, time, & money. Home schooling has many critics, & by researching what each has to say about home schooling can help you make the best choice for you & your family.

The most often cited disadvantage to home schooling programs is the lack of socialization. When children are removed from public or private schools, they are often placed in to an environment in which they spend small time with anyone other than family. This can be very detrimental to social skills, especially in elementary school years. Children need to get involved with community organizations, such as church youth group, Boy or Girl Scouts, small league, & other such groups. However, this takes more time & cash than is often possible for home schooling parents.

Time is often an issue. When a mother or father spends all day with their child, teaching the many lessons that would otherwise be taught at a traditional school, other things, such as housework, pile up very quickly. This can lead to stress within the family. Parents who teach their children also may find that their own social lives suffer. Time during the day that is set aside for lunch dates or other social events is now spent with the children. Parents also are removed from the work force, & so may spend most of the time within the home & have small opportunity for interaction outside of the family.

Being removed from the workforces has one other disadvantage-less money. When a family begins home schooling, it is most likely that one of the parents becomes a full-time educator for their children. This means that the family must live from one income. Home schooling children can also be more expensive in itself, when compared to public schooling, which is free. The curriculum can cost up to $500 per child per year, & getting involved in social settings, such as with field trips or home schooling groups also costs money.

Regardless of these disadvantages to home schooling, it is still an option that parents should conesider if they are at all discontented with traditional schooling methods. These are many obstacles that home schooled students & parents must overcome, but the key is to select the education program that is perfect for your family.
