I went to a 6 yr medical school after high school and have not done any research before. Do I need any research experience before getting into a masters program?

It completely depends on what University you want to go to. To tell you the truth, it’s a little risky that you’ve been in school that long and are ready to begin your PhD work, and have not referred with the University of your choice. Most people by now have chosen their University, and found out about the requirements and stipulations. I don’t think any APA accredited college is going to be easy for you to get into, and it depends on where you want to go to school anyway. That really isn’t enough information to say. Your grades are good and that’s a well-reputed school, so that’s a good start, but what about your research record? Have you published papers? (Was your MSc thesis published?) Will your research advisor give you a top-notch recommendation?

If you have a few papers published, then you have a shot. If you don’t have any published papers, iffy.

Ph.D. experiences will differ for everyone. Some will swear it was the worst years of their life, other will say it wasn’t so bad. My experience was a little of both. The were both good and bad days, good and bad months, and good and bad years.

I finished my Ph.D. in microbiology one year ago and now one year into a post-doc (good topic for another question). My Ph.D. took me six years to complete and in those six years I switched programs and later moved to a new University when my advisor took a new job. I initially started on in a Cellular and Molecular Biology program but switched over to a Molecular Microbiolgy when the University I was attending created the new program. The switch in programs also led to a switch in projects. The move to a new University also set me back about a semester.

For my Ph.D. I received a full tutition waiver as we as a fellowship which paid quite well. It is nice to be paid to go to school but you need to look at it as a full time job and not school. I usually put in well over 40 hours every week. 14 hour days, while not the norm, were not uncommon. You will hear horror stories from a lot of people about grad school but it really depends on your advisor and their expectations of you. My advisor expect a lot out of us but gave us a lot of support. This not always the case as I have seen some fellow grad students basically be sent off on their own to figure out their own projects. Without much guidence, these students usually quit grad school or finished with a Master’s. While the goal of a Ph.D. programs is to teach you how to be an independant researcher, for your first couple of years you will need a lot of guidence. My last couple of years of school, I was completely self sufficient and working on my own. My advisor didn’t know half the stuff I was working on.

Overall, working on my Ph.D. was a lot of work but was worth it (so far). My experience wasn’t too bad. There were ups and downs but I made it through alright. My advice for you, if you decide to go for your Ph.D. would be to work and and make the best of it.
