Kaplan is regionally accredited (the highest level for an institution) You can check if a college is legitimate here:

What are you going to school for? That will be a big factor. Some large state schools such as Penn State have nice online programs.

My neighbor considered both, but finally went to Kaplan after flunking out of a community college. She got a so called bachelors “degree” form Kaplan. When she went to apply for jobs, she was told repeatedly that the “degree” from Kaplan was not considered valid. She wasted a lot of time and money, only to discover that no potential employer in the area would accept Kaplan as legit. I know another girl who had a similar experience with University of Phoenix. The bottom line here is that for profit colleges are generally not accepted by most employers. One interviwer even told the Kaplan “graduate” that having Kaplan even mentioned on a job application seemed to imply that the applicant was a sucker. He went on to say that the mention of Kaplan, U. of Phoenix, or any online program was like having an automatic NO on any job application with them.
As a former job recruiter, I can say that we never hired anyone with an online degree. There have been a lot of reports of people hiring imposters to take online classes for them, resulting in someone getting an online “degree” without ever having earned it, or learning anything at all.
Avoid any for profit college or any online programs and you should be fine. Some legit brick and mortar public and nonprofit colleges offer a limited number of online courses, but generally limit you to 12 semester hours as counting towards a bachelors degree. That means that you may be able to take a few legit online courses via that route.
