I want to get my teaching certificate. I already have a bachelors degree in sociology. No school around me offers just a ‘teaching certificate’, I would have to get a second bachelors degree that would take close to 2 years! I’m an adult with a mortgage, that just seems impossible. Are online degrees comparable?

Frankly, no. But they are much better than nothing.
But for a teaching certificate, I doubt it would make that much difference – I mean, you already HAVE a traditional degree, right?

Unfortunately its not. However, hope is not lost. There are many institutions that offer many education degrees but they are not online. In case of your mortgage problem you can take part time classes and have a part time job to pay off your mortgage. OR you can enroll in need based school and have a part time job to pay off your mortgage. But from my side i don’t see a reason for you to have a teaching certificate. Just soak up the experience and then find a better job after a few years when the economy recovers. I wish you the best.

in almost all cases online degrees are not comparable to a traditional degree.

As long as the college (online or campus based) is regionally accredited, any degree you earn should be accepted by any potential employers or other academic institutions.
My best recommendation would be to contact a number of colleges to find the best fit for you and your needs (tuition, schedule, career opportunities, etc.). Too often people enroll in the first school they find rather than taking the time to find the best school for them. Taking that time now could save you a lot of time, money and frustration if you choose the wrong school.
This site has some good info on regionally accredited online degrees and some colleges that offer them to help expand your search:

I think you can enter your info on there for any colleges you are interested in and they will send you more info for free. Good Luck!
